Alms House Records from the William A. Bayard Sutton Collection

The Kent County Alms House records offer insight into the care of the economically disadvantaged in Kent County, Maryland. The collection consists of a CD-ROM of scanned images of two ledgers from the Alms House Records from the William A. Bayard Sutton Collection of the Kent County Historical Society from 1896-1940. The first ledger contains meeting minutes and financial records of the trustees of the alms house from 1906-1932. The second ledger contains records of the occupants of the alms house. The records list each resident's name, race, nationality, age, trade, birthplace, and date of discharge or death from 1896-1940. It also contains a photograph of the alms house.

The Waller Family Collection is a genealogical collection relating to the Waller family from 1606-2008 with the bulk of the collection ranging from 1982-1998. The majority of the collection contains genealogical information of the direct line of the Waller family as well as the various extended family lines. The collection also includes topical publications on Somerset County and the Lower Eastern Shore of Maryland as well as online and genealogical research manuals. The collection documents the family with images, newspaper clippings, tax documents, church and census documents, and letters.

John Chamberlin papers

The John Chamberlin papers document his archeological excavations in Maryland. Records include his archeological surveys, artifact lists, proposal documents, maps and artifacts collected during his digs. These materials date from 1910-2010, with the bulk of the material dating from 1991-2003. Many of the documents relate to William Claiborne, who established a trading settlement on southern Kent Island in 1631. Chamberlin also excavated at Rich Neck Manor, later named Sherwood Manor, in St. Michaels, Maryland which is assumed to have been originally occupied in 1649-1652 by Captain William Mitchell. The Kent Fort materials include information on The Claiborne Project which was an archaeological survey that attempted to locate Kent Fort using Chamberlin’s research. The archeological artifacts contain Native American and colonial finds dating to the 17th and 18th century. These artifacts include bones, stones, tools, beads, and pottery, pipe stems fragments, and wooden and metal artifacts including coins.

Lieutenant Colonel Edward Henry Bowes Collection

The Lieutenant Colonel Edward H. Bowes Collection documents the personal history of Lieutenant Colonel Edward Henry Bowes (1896-1944). Personal items relating to Edward Bowes’ career in the U.S. Army from 1919 to 1944 include diaries, photographs, and other service-related documents. Bowes’ wife Roselmer Bowes (nee McKee) and two children lived primarily in New York and San Francisco, California and are documented through photographs and other documents. Bowes was a prisoner of war (POW) in a Philippine Military Prison Camp during World War II and later died after his prisoner vessel was sunk. There are also two yearbooks, a photo album, a birth certificate of Roselmer Bowes (nee McKee), a handbook meant for cadets about the West Point Military Academy, and a copy of a telegram and record detailing Bowes’ death.

Account book documenting the agricultural and manufacturing business of Wilbur Eliason in Chestertown, Maryland, 1887-1902. Straw board mill accounts include improvements and expenses regarding equipment repairs, and the purchase of large quantities of hay and straw. Also noted are Mr. Eliason's expenses with the Union Straw Board Company. Personal expenses for his household are also noted including foodways, servants, wages, cigars and donations to charitable organizations.
